The annual Viking Invitational wrestling tournament will be held in Challis on Friday and Saturday, February 3 and 4. The tournament enhances the Mario D’Orazio Memorial Scholarship fund that was established in memory of Mario Danato Brent D’Orazio who was a graduate and outstanding wrestler at Challis High School.

Mario was an avid outdoorsman. He loved fishing, hunting, motorcycling, golfing and many other outdoor activities. He excelled in the sport of wrestling in which he was a two-time state champion. He also promoted the sport after his high school career by coaching young wrestlers in the communities where he lived.

The memorial scholarship is available to graduating seniors of Challis High School.

Tournament sessions begin Friday with Round One starting at 3 p.m. The remaining rounds begin Saturday at 9:30 a.m. There will be a food court both days and a variety of breakfast items starting at 7 a.m. Saturday.

Money for the scholarship is raised by a knife raffle and donations made in memory of Mario. Al Sullivan, Mario’s uncle and now from Payette, Idaho, handcrafts this beautiful knife. The knife is made of Brazilian rosewood with a sheep horn bolster and D2 steel at 58 Rockwell. Each year’s knife has an etching on the blade signifying the year.

The drawing for this knife will be at the annual invitational tournament held in memory of Mario D’Orazio. Tickets are $2 each.

The funds have been used throughout the years to help many other students achieve their educational goals through a $1,000 scholarship given to a Challis High senior each year. Last year’s recipients were Morgan Hughes and Savannah D’Orazio.
