Blackhearts place second at district
Challis Viking Blackheart wrestlers took to the road last week to test their skills against five other teams in Salmon for 2A-1A District VI competition and came out in second place with 160.5 points and 13 individuals headed to state.
Blackhearts wrestled in 12 weight categories and, when all the grappling was done February 17, had four first-place winners: Kade Bruno, 120 lbs., Cooper Erickson, 152 lbs., Pete Bradshaw, 160 lbs., and Jakob Plummer, 182 lbs.
Bruin Bradshaw, 132 lbs., made it to second place in his weight class.
Ty Redick, 113 lbs., made his way to the first-place match but lost to Cahl Williams from Salmon and ultimately placed second.
Jayce Giampedraglia, 120 lbs., lost his quarterfinal match in a 2-1 decision but came back in the third-place match to pin Trey Welker from North Fremont.
Dakota Peterson, 132 lbs., worked his way to third place after losing one to Ririe in the semi-finals but later pinning Brody Matthews from Salmon.
DJ Lanier, 138 lbs., fought his way to third place, wrestling three individuals to take his place in the winner’s circle.
Brandon Pestana, 152 lbs., lost in the quarterfinal but beat a Ririe opponent and then Firth’s Tyrell Steffler to win third place.
Blaine Ammar, 195 lbs., won his quarterfinal match against Quentin Tappana of Ririe but had to work his way back up the rungs after losing the semi-final and ultimately took down Tappana in the third place spot.
Logan Reed at 98 lbs. worked his way up to fifth and will have a spot at state.
Matthew Weiderhold placed fourth but will be heading on to state because the wrestler who prevailed over Weiderhold in districts will not be able to compete.
