Thirteen Challis Vikings Blackheart wrestlers made their way through winter storms to meet the state’s best wrestlers at Ford Idaho Center last weekend in Nampa.
They came away with the 1A division championship, two individual championships, four place winners and a third place spot in the combined 1A/2A division.
Matching skills with 14 other teams in the 1A division, Blackhearts kept up the heat to score enough to place first. Individuals Pete Bradshaw, 160 lbs., won a state championship. Kade Bruno, 120 lbs., also took his turn on the podium for a state championship. Adding to the team’s standing were Ty Redick, 113 lbs., placing third; Jakob Plummer, 182 lbs., placing fourth; and Cooper Erickson, 152 lbs., taking fifth.
Bradshaw and Bruno won their respective matches, each in four straight with three falls and one decision.
Redick took two of his matches (fall and decision) but lost in a decision against Cahl Williams of Salmon. Redick came back to win in a major decision and earned his third-place spot by winnning against Michael Barfuss of North Gem.
Plummer won in the first round over an Aberdeen opponent and continued with a pin in the quarterfinals. He lost one and won another in the semifinals. He lost in his match with Jace Perrin from Prairie and so took fourth place.
Erickson won two out of five matches to place fifth.
The team scored 122 points in the 1A/2A division, only to be outdone by Ririe (188.5) and New Plymouth (150).
