Blood moon rising

The moon turns a deep shade of red during a partial lunar eclipse known as a “blood moon.” This blood moon rose high above Phoenix on April 15, 2014. In a total solar eclipse the moon completely blocks the sun, so the sun appears to be black with a ring of white around the edge. Challis is in the path of totality for the Aug. 21 solar eclipse. People have long looked to the sky, the sun and the moon for clues, inspiration and guidance, and photographers have captured many spectacular images of the moon and sun.
