Ready to go fishin’

Spring has sprung, snow is melting, and that means the skiing, boating and steelhead fishing seasons are overlapping in Salmon River country. Above, the photographer’s cats, Sunny and Shyloh, had fun jumping in and out of his tandem canoe while he was rigging it during a previous season. So far, he hasn’t persuaded the felines to actually float the river, although they follow him like dogs on nighttime walks. Note that inner tubes work well as a poor man’s flotation bags in the event of a canoe capsize. Those made by boating companies cost more. So do life preservers for dogs, but they’re worth every penny for animal lovers. The cats would no doubt have to settle for small dog life jackets and would be mad if the pilot capsized the canoe. Mountain Transitions by Jim Connor

March sunrise… A bright blue sky shines over clouds taking color from a sun still below the horizon. The morning was mild, and very little frost had settled on the photographer’s sleeping bag. Spring was near. Jim Connor photos

Considering the next move

Brodee Hunting grimaces as he tries to escape getting pinned by Jaiden Wright. The two Challis Little Guy Wrestlers were among 44 wrestlers from Challis and Mackay who competed at the annual Little Guy Wrestling Tournament last Wednesday. Another 56 boys and girls in Challis Gymnastics put on a demonstration of tumbling prior the start of wrestling. The young wrestlers, “Champions in the Making,” begin at age 4 and go through fifth grade, while the gymnasts begin a bit earlier, starting with boys and girls ages 3-5 in the first group, kindergarteners through third graders in the second, and fourth graders and older in the third group. See more photos of the dual athletic event inside this week’s issue of The Challis Messenger.
