Light lifting

BJ Bryant lifts son Evan at the skating rink next to Challis Elementary School Friday evening. Members of the Challis Masonic Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star are sponsoring family skating parties this winter and providing hot chocolate. Evan tried to keep his balance and could stand on his skates for short periods, but BJ had to keep a close eye and hands on him. Weather permitting, skating is planned Friday, Jan. 19, around 4 p.m. Todd Adams photo

Frosty scenes

The air inversion and low cloud cover over Challis earlier this week means frosty coats hang onto trees, shrubs, fences and tall grasses all day long instead of dropping off after the sun pops out. These pine needles and cones shimmered with their white topping.

Great balls o’ fire!

The owl ears from little Sawyer Herr’s owl hat are silhouetted against a fireball from the annual Christmas tree burn at Land of the Yankee Fork State Park last Friday night. She is the 11-month-old daughter of Chris and Lyndee Herr. People showed up for a bit of light and heat to chase away the winter blues. North Custer volunteer firefighters ignited and kept a close eye on the fire. Marshmallows, s’mores and hot chocolate provided by Idaho Parks and Recreation staffers were gratefully accepted. Last year the event was canceled because it was cold and deep snow buried the few discarded Christmas trees brought to the park, Manager Joni Hawley said.
