Good Old Days of Custer County

“The ‘Mormon Rose’ or ‘Yellow Rose of Texas’ and several other yellow rose varieties grow abundantly in Challis.” This is not the photo that ran 25 years ago of a rose in the McGowan yard in Challis. This color photo was taken last week of a few blossoms on a huge rosebush on the east side of the old Leaton Hotel at the corner of Fourth Street and Main Avenue. The rosebush that was in the McGowan yard is now gone. Challis matriarch Madge Yacomella says the rosebush by the old Leaton Hotel is the biggest now in Challis. Todd Adams photo

Lovely lilacs bloom

Lilacs bloom in a Challis yard next to a smelter pot formerly owned by John Ivie. His family isn’t sure where this piece of Custer County mining history came from but said it’s too heavy to move so it remains a fixture in the backyard. Todd Adams photo

Poppies pop out

Poppies were blooming at their peak in a Challis backyard on a recent afternoon as May gave way to June. In the background are the cliffs above town and a few of the many rain clouds that have been scudding through Round Valley this spring. Todd Adams photo
