Good Old Days of Custer County

Students in Idaho State University’s new Crop and Soil Technology course are being trained for agricultural jobs that will supplement the actual production of farming. The two-year program, offered in ISU’s Trade and Technical School, is training students as technologists for work with agricultural manufacturers and conservation agencies. Here the program’s full-time instructor, Leslie G. Jackson (right), points up the things to look for in a good crop of corn. The students are (left) Marion McDaniel, Ellis, and Richard Philips, Challis.

Turkeys trot around town

A rafter of wild turkeys has been spotted wandering through Challis, sometimes crossing Main Street. So far they haven’t been seen using one of the crosswalks as the deer routinely do. Veronica Weisbeck photo

Cool cat, deer in snow

A mule deer doe bedded down on a Challis lawn doesn’t seem to mind the fresh snow on her coat the morning of Nov. 17, or the nearby cat. Sunny, the cool cat, likewise isn’t phased by the snow or the deer. The doe did keep a wary eye on the photographer. Minutes after the snow flurries, the sun came out and melted the snow.
