Mountain Transitions by Jim Connor

Utah chubs as baitfish are often released into local waters after fishing outings and soon take over lakes and ponds. Although they can reach respectable size, they are usually stunted. They are rarely eaten by local fishermen. These fish measured six to eight inches long. They were marinated before being grilled over applewood coals to well done. Once the cooked fish had “rested” for a few minutes, they were as tasty as yellow perch. Jim Connor photos

Male tree crickets rub their wings together in a process called stridulation in order to produce one of summer’s more pleasant sounds. The tempo increases with temperature and comes to a halt near freezing. The object of stridulating is lady tree crickets like this one sitting on a domestic garden dianthus. The crickets are about an inch long.
