Norse News - Students model trig functions with spaghetti
Last week students in Challis High School’s advanced math class made models of trigonometric functions using raw spaghetti.Meegan Corrigan, Kaleb Latimer, James Wilson, Loni Dowton, Hayley Williams and Sherray Callistini created a model of the cosine functions. They formed lengths of raw spaghetti noodles that corresponded to cosine values for a variety of angles, then transferred those to an X-Y axis to “see” the periodic behavior of the cosine wave. Lauren Garlie, Nathan Van Dusen, Dillon Savage, Randy Plummer and Liz Spence used the same process for values of the sine function to create their waves. “This was an interesting project to creatively display these functions,” said Nathan Van Dusen. Posters of the spaghetti functions are currently on display in the main hall at the high school.
