Good Old Days of Custer County

“The ‘Mormon Rose’ or ‘Yellow Rose of Texas’ and several other yellow rose varieties grow abundantly in Challis.” This is not the photo that ran 25 years ago of a rose in the McGowan yard in Challis. This color photo was taken last week of a few blossoms on a huge rosebush on the east side of the old Leaton Hotel at the corner of Fourth Street and Main Avenue. The rosebush that was in the McGowan yard is now gone. Challis matriarch Madge Yacomella says the rosebush by the old Leaton Hotel is the biggest now in Challis. Todd Adams photo

Challis endurance runners face mud, rain, cold

Two local runners and their families share a pit stop at the Bayhorse aid station during the 50K race of the River of No Return run Saturday. At left, Gwen Cogley’s daughter Halle gives her mom a snack while husband Jamie helps with gear. At right, Greg Webster helps wife Cheri rehydrate with electolytes. Her sons, Parker and Hunter, were on hand to help out, too. Todd Adams photo

Runners faced mud, rain, cold and hail, heard thunder and saw lightning in the distance during the June 16 River of No Return endurance runs around Challis.
