John Lloyd Powers

John Lloyd Powers
John Lloyd Powers was born in Mackay, (White Knob), Idaho August 31, 1924 to Lloyd Powers and Mary Atha Powers. John entered into rest February 1, 2014 with his children Pat and Mary at his side at the Lost Rivers Hospital, Arco, Idaho, at the age of 89.

John lived his first year of life in White Knob, Idaho, then he and his family moved to Val Verde, Utah. He attended his first three years of school there before he and his family moved back to Mackay where he was a lifelong resident. John loved playing the trombone in marching band during his high school years and was in charge of marching commands. He graduated as Salutatorian in 1942. Following high school, John attended Idaho State University and Weber State University where he was studying pre-pharmacy. He was also lead singer at the Weber State Musicals.

His father was electrocuted in 1943, and John gave up his education and music and returned to Mackay to take over the farm for his mother.

In 1945 he, his brother Charles and mother, bought the dairy in Mackay.

This was a fruitful adventure until 1951 when the carton of milk came out and there was no need for bottled milk deliveries. He and Charlie began seed potatoes after this time.

In 1954 John was drafted to Korea with the 7th Calvary, and returned home in 1957 and it was back to farming, as usual. In 1969 John bought 300 head of sheep that began his 30-year career in the sheep business. He also raised hay, cows, pigs and a few chickens.

One of John’s favorite pastimes was dancing to the big bands. He also had an amazing voice and sang and played stand-up bass with local bands. He also sang at several funerals and weddings in the community through the years.

In 2005, he wrote a book, The Mackay I Remember. He was known for his amazing memory of the people and events of the community. He will be dearly missed by all.

John is survived by his children Patrick Powers (Michelle), Mary Powers Rosenkrance; stepchildren Marilyn Baumgardner (Wayne), Boyd Jernberg (Wendy), Eddie Jernberg (Tony), Duane Jernberg and Dale Jernberg; grandchildren Caleb Rosenkrance (Alisa), Chase Rosenkrance, Autumn Powers (Jesse) and Abigayl Powers; great-grandchildren Ayden Brownson and Maryjane Rosenkrance; nephews Calvin Powers, Gary Manson, Ted Cahoon and Bill Cahoon; nieces Becky Cahoon, Mary Lynn Cahoon, Charlotte McKelvey, Melvey Bean and Kay Brown.
