Loyel Dean "Smitty" Smith
Loyel Dean 'Smitty' Smith, 81, passed away April 23, 2014 in Pocatello, Idaho from complications following a stroke in January 2014.

He was born January 2, 1933 in Grace, Idaho, the second of six children born to LaVerl "Ted" Smith and Millie Corbridge Smith. He attended school in Grace graduating from Grace High School in 1953. He enlisted in the army after graduation, but received an honorable discharge in October 1953 when a heart condition was discovered. He attended Idaho State College for two years studying electricity.

He then worked various jobs as well as being a Salmon fishing guide in the Stanley area. He met Judy Critchfield in the summer of 1959 and they eloped to Elko, Nevada and married July 23, 1960. To that union was born a daughter, LaVon, and a son, Tim. Dean lived in the Stanley area until 1980, raising his family, fishing and serving the community by being a volunteer firefighter and the president of the Stanley Sewer Association for many years. While in Stanley, Dean worked for the Idaho Transportation Department for 12 years. He then started his own businesses: Smitty's Saw Sales and Service and Stanley Contracting.

In 1980 Dean and Judy moved to Challis. Dean continued his businesses until he retired about 10 years ago. He was then able to fully indulge in fishing whenever he wanted for about five years.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Frank, Terry and Farrell.
