Joel Peterson filed for the Custer County sheriff’s post and Ron Bloxham filed for the District 1 county commission seat on Monday.
The filing period for the May 21 primary election opened Monday and the two Challis Republicans were the first to submit their paperwork. The filing period closes at 5 p.m. Friday, March 15.
Peterson is seeking a four-year term as sheriff. Stu Lumpkin has announced his early retirement from the sheriff’s position. He is leaving office April 30. The chief deputy will work as the sheriff until county commissioners appoint an interim sheriff to hold the office until someone is elected in November and takes office in January. The Custer County Republican Central Committee must submit the names of three people to be considered for the interim sheriff’s job to commissioners, who will then select an interim sheriff. GOP central committee members won’t meet to select their candidates until after Lumpkin leaves office. They have 15 days after that to submit names to county commissioners, who in turn have 15 days to appoint an interim sheriff.
Bloxham filed for the two-year commission seat that represents Challis and the areas north of Challis to the Pahsimeroi. The District 1 seat is currently held by Jake Zollinger, who was appointed Jan. 26 to fill out the remainder of the term that Wayne Butts was elected to in 2020. Butts died on Jan. 8, creating a vacancy on the commission.
The District 3 county commission seat, currently held by Steve Smith, is also open this election cycle. It’s a four-year term. Candidates must live in District 3, which includes the areas east and south of Challis to Mackay.
The four-year prosecuting attorney post is up for grabs this election. All precinct committee member positions for the Constitution, Democrat, Libertarian and Republican parties are also open this cycle.
Idaho voters will cast ballots for Idaho House of Representatives and Idaho Senate candidates on May 21 and Idaho’s U.S. representatives.
On Monday, Geoff Schroeder and Christy Zito, both Republicans, filed for the Idaho Senate District 8 seat. The District 8A seat in the Idaho House of Representatives drew two candidates Monday. Matt Bundy, a Republican, and Tony Ullrich, a member of the Constitution Party, filed for that two-year seat. Republican Faye Thompson filed for the District 8B seat in the Idaho House.
Also on this year’s ballots are Idaho’s two seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. Republican Russ Fulcher, Libertarian Matt Loesby and Constitution Party member Brendan Gomez all filed Monday for the congressional district 1 seat. Democrat David Roth and Republican Mike Simpson filed for the district 2 spot.
